06/11 Drawing: Building on the Basics

In this six-week class, students will refine their drawing skills by focusing on shapes, rendering, and composition. Building on previous drawing experience, we will explore specific techniques, culminating in 2-3 completed drawings in each class.

In this six-week class, students will refine their drawing skills by focusing on shapes, rendering, and composition. Building on previous drawing experience, we will explore specific techniques, culminating in 2-3 completed drawings in each class.

Techniques covered in this course:

  • Blending from dark to light

  • Perspective

  • Creating the illusion of depth in a composition 

  • Transferring image studies into one drawing

  • A straightforward approach to breaking down face and body drawings

  • How to simplify an image for an easier drawing process

The first composition will be a class-created drawing, guided step by step. For the subsequent drawings, students will choose the subject while following, applying the same process. 

About the Instructor

Emo Gonzales aka EMONIC is an illustration and graphic design artist that has exhibited with galleries along with work for small press comic companies such as Ferric Press on Gevaudan.

His artwork gained a following through his work with Vertigo’s The Sandman fine art shows and as of recent for an H.R. Giger collective art show with Copro Gallery in Santa Monica CA.

Predominantly he is a self taught artist who has had high esteemed mentors that have worked in the fields of Teaching,Animation, Comics, Fine Art and Design. He holds a A.S. Multi Media and Desktop Publishing.

As of the past few years his work was with teaching art and workshops in the CA, Bay Area. He primarily self publishes his work in sketchbooks and various prints of his own designed creations. Along with presenting  work through galleries, conventions, live art events, contract work, and commissions.

His work has been supported by numerous collectors over the years from music artists, actors, and even a direct descendant of Edgar Allan Poe.

- A range of dark to light pencils (recommended HB, 2B, 4B, 6B)
- Sumi Ink with brush (Size 2 or 3)
- Charcoal
- Tracing paper
- Kneaded Eraser
- Standard hard Eraser
- Blending Tool
- General sketchbook
- 11x14 Bristol paper for finished drawings

We will paint various locations on the San Francisco Peninsula using soft pastels. Lots of individual attention and demonstrations at each class.

Students will learn how to draw the portrait using the ‘Reilly Rhythm Chart’, an aide for simplifying the complex anatomy of the human face. The rhythm chart includes the major landmarks of the skull, as well as key muscle groups of the face. This technique will help artists gain confidence in the drawing the complex anatomy and perspectives of the human face. This course will be a great preparation for portrait painting.
