Description
Take your relief printmaking to the next level: the reduction cut technique will give you multi-color options to help you fully express yourself and produce truly breath-taking prints. This in-person weekend we will focus on carving (both linoleum and wood blocks), drawing and designing for a reduction project, accurate registration systems, ink modifiers, hand press technique, a look back at the history of relief printmaking and the artistic perspective. This is a very satisfying, non-toxic easy clean-up art form that is ideal for your home studio. For beginners to advanced. Bring images that you wish to explore and whatever relief cut materials you have--I will provide carving tools, ink, paper and other tools we will need. I look forward to working with you in this exciting medium that offers infinite options and directions in relief printmaking.
About the Instructor
Nicholas Collins was born and raised in Oakland, CA, where he had the opportunity to attend the Berkeley Children’s Art Studio as a child. This early experience fostered his confidence as an artist and instilled in him a deep respect for the creative process. With parents from England, he spent much of his youth in Sussex, shaping his artistic perspective through diverse cultural influences. He later studied art history, drawing, and sculpture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before further honing his printmaking skills under master printmakers Kazuko Watanabe and Emmanuel Montoya at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, where he completed his residency.
Nicholas specializes in reduction linocut printmaking, producing hand-pressed, limited edition—often one-of-a-kind—prints.
An experienced instructor, Nicholas regularly teaches linocut workshops and a weekly printmaking studio class at the Mendocino Art Center. He also recently completed a two-year teaching residency at Art Explorers in Fort Bragg, CA, where he taught linocut to artists with developmental disabilities. More of his work and contact information can be found on his Instagram: @nicholas_collins_printmaker.
