09/10 Concepts in Watercolor and Developing the Individual Artist

This class is designed for advanced watercolor students interested in learning new techniques such as combining watercolor with gouache, soft chalk pastel, and lifting techniques that instructor Robin Scholl has developed and taught for many years at PAL.

Description

Skill Level: Intermediate

This class is designed for advanced watercolor students interested in learning new techniques such as combining watercolor with gouache, soft chalk pastel, and lifting techniques that instructor Robin Scholl has developed and taught for many years at PAL. Traditional concepts such as composition, value, color-layering with washes, and watercolor handling are also taught.

This is a friendly class with gentle motivation and guidance. Students work from their own landscape photos and are encouraged to plan and prepare their paintings with a value drawing before the painting process begins. The instructor asks that new students come prepared with a 4 x 6 landscape photo, preferably their own. Class materials will be reviewed at the first session.

***Please note that there is not class September 24***

About the Instructor

Robin Scholl has been painting in her Los Altos studio and at the Pacific Art League for more than 30 years. She is known for impressionistic landscapes with a focus on light and color in the natural world. She works from photographs taken during her wide travels and favorite California scenes, using four media: oils, watercolor, watercolor with pastel, and watercolor with gouache. Her signature layered technique builds up the media, creating movement and depth uncommon in watercolors. She is a serving member of the board and veteran instructor at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto and has a B.A. in studio art and a teaching credential in arts instruction from UCSB. Her Pacific Art League classes in watercolor, oil media, and landscape drawing are popular favorites. She has been affiliated with galleries across the U.S., including Mona Berman Fine Arts (New Haven, CT), Corporate Art Directions (New York, NY), Andrea Schwartz Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Greenleaf Gallery (Saratoga, CA), and The Equinox (Chicago, IL).

Her work has been commissioned for large scale by major corporations and recognized in three different statewide competitions at the Triton Museum of Art, as well as in juried shows at the Santa Cruz Art League and the Pacific Art League. Scholl exhibits continuously at Fast Frame Gallery in Los Altos, occasionally at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto.
