This class will cover the basics of painting and drawing with soft pastels. Students will learn the various types of strokes and approaches to successful paintings which include composition, use of color, and use of value.

This class will cover the basics of painting and drawing with soft pastels.
Students will learn the various types of strokes and approaches to successful paintings which include composition, use of color, and use of value. We will work from simple still lifes and photos.
Each class will start with a demonstration. Students can bring their own source photos to work from or we can work together on a subject.
This class is limited to nine students and will cover all the steps to creating beautiful pastel paintings. Lots of individual attention and demos included. Some pastel experience is helpful.

About the Instructor
Jan Prisco is a pastel and oil painter who focuses on paintings of the San Francisco peninsula to Big Sur. Most of her paintings are begun plein air with an emphasis on simplification and value while capturing vibrant color and light. Her work can be viewed online at www.janprisco.com
Jan teaches pastel painting on an ongoing basis at University Art Store (UART) in Redwood City, California, and for Atherton Arts Foundation. She is also is fortunate to have had the opportunity to teach plein air workshops at Filoli Historic House and Garden as well as Allied Arts Guild. Jan also mentors individually other pastel painters.

Tombow Dual Brush Pens – Black N15, Middle Gray N65, Light Gray N95
OR
Three Rembrandt soft pastels in black, middle value gray and light gray.
I will have extras if you cannot find these….they will be used for our Notan or value studies that we do to start a painting.
SMALL SKETCH BOOK or Paper on which to sketch.
PAPER: Sanded papers. Bring relatively small pieces….6x8, 8x10, 9x12, 11x14
One large piece of Canson Mi -Teintes paper cut into small sizes like 6x8, 8x10, 9x12
PASTELS: Soft pastels from Rembrandt, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, Unison, etc.
University Art carries Rembrandt and Sennelier. A few NuPastel colors or the starter box also. A dark NuPastel for underpainting and sketching; Indigo Blue and Bottle Green are two good choices carried by University Art.
DRAWING BOARD-some sort of support such as gatorboard to tape your paper to when you work on your paintings and to get the paintings to your car. I will have tape.
WET WIPES and a dry cloth/paper towels
TURPENOID oderless paint thinner and small container for small amount such as an empty baby food jar. I will bring extra.
INEXPENSIVE LARGE BRISTLE BRUSH- LARGE old bristle brush will be great, usually used for oil painting. Size 8, 9, 10 or 12. I will bring extras.
Bring one or two photographs to paint from after the first day.
