07/13 Encaustic Monotypes: Whims of Summer Workshop

Throughout this course, students will immerse themselves in the foundational principles of artistic expression: drawing. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to equip students with foundational drawing tools to approach any complex form- from geometric to organic.

Students will learn how to draw the portrait using the ‘Reilly Rhythm Chart’, an aide for simplifying the complex anatomy of the human face. The rhythm chart includes the major landmarks of the skull, as well as key muscle groups of the face. This technique will help artists gain confidence in the drawing the complex anatomy and perspectives of the human face. This course will be a great preparation for portrait painting.

Through guided instruction, we will choose 2 locations for subject options ranging from iconic architecture nestled in the manicured campus to more open parklike landscapes. We will discuss ways to simplify what we see, suggest a “story” and how to complete paintings in a limited amount of time.

Welcome to the wonderful world of hot wax painting! Encaustic painting is one of the oldest forms of painting, in this class you will learn the fundamentals of the encaustic studio with a modern twist incorporating encaustic skins, found objects and ephemera.

In this workshop, you will learn the process for creating and folding a large piece of art paper to create a beautiful, personalized art book or concertina (accordion folded piece).

In this class, students will explore the art of captivating wildlife using watercolors. Step-by step demonstrations and personalized feedback will feature to help students develop their own unique approach.

In this workshop, we will create a series of mini 6-inch ”art” collages. These are different from what most think of with traditional collage as the focus will be on creating fine art pieces with good composition, color harmony, interest and balance with no magazines or other copyrighted materials. We will use only unique painted and patterned papers that you create.

Take advantage of the fast-drying nature of acrylic to create translucent and luminous paintings.

Students will work from a live model each day, beginning and completing a new portrait during each session.

This workshop will introduce students to the fundamental techniques of portrait drawing, guiding them through a clear, step-by-step process to create expressive and accurate likenesses.

This simple one-day workshop on drawing will walk you through many of the “basics” of drawing.

Capturing the golden hills, meadow and grasslands, distant treelines and Coastal vistas will be the focus of this oil painting workshop. The class will yield several paintings over a 2 day period.

Designed for beginner to intermediate oil painters, this session emphasizes expressive mark-making, simplified forms, and capturing the essence of roses rather than fine detail.

Unleash your artistic prowess by mastering the techniques of painting rustic surfaces imbued with the aged patinas of old wood and rusty metal using watercolor.

This in-person weekend we will focus on carving (both linoleum and wood blocks), drawing and designing for a reduction project, accurate registration systems, ink modifiers, hand press technique, a look back at the history of relief printmaking and the artistic perspective.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will create vibrant landscapes using a combination of acrylic paint and colorful collage papers. Whether you’re drawn to abstraction or prefer a more recognizable scene, this class offers the tools and guidance to bring your vision to life on canvas.
