06/21 Cyanotype & Encaustic Workshop

Join us for a hands-on, immersive two-day workshop where photography meets painting in a journey of layered creativity.

Description

Join us for a hands-on, immersive two-day workshop where photography meets painting in a journey of layered creativity.

Day One: Cyanotype Magic
Begin with the beautiful blue world of cyanotype printing. Using light-sensitive chemistry and natural or found objects, you'll create your own striking cyanotype prints. We’ll guide you through the entire process—from composition and exposure to development—resulting in unique, ethereal images developed in sunlight.

Day Two: Encaustic Exploration
Take your cyanotype to the next level by integrating it into an encaustic artwork. Through the use of hot wax, pigments, and mixed media techniques, you'll learn how to build up texture, depth, and luminosity. Your cyanotype becomes the foundation for a richly layered piece that blends the photographic with the painterly.

Whether you're new to these techniques or looking to expand your creative toolkit, this workshop offers an inspiring and experimental environment to explore both process and play.

All materials provided. No prior experience necessary—just bring your curiosity!

About the Instructor

Chela Noto is an abstract artist and works primarily in the encaustic medium. Born in Peru, she lived in many different countries during her childhood before moving to San Francisco.

Her work, best described as impressionistic botanicals and landscapes, are a collaged of layers of encaustic skins and other media.  Her other artistic pursuits include alternative photographic processes which she incorporates into her work.

She is inspired by the botanical illustrations of 18th and 19th century artists Maria Sybille Marien, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Sydney Parkinson.

Chela teaches traditional and mixed media encaustic painting at the Pacific Art League and offers clinics and workshops at her home studio in Los Gatos.

She has a degree in Theatre History (BA) from Reed College, a Masters degree in Directing from San Francisco State. She studied Art History at SUNY Syracuse in Madrid, Spain, photography and alternative photographic processes at DeAnza College and Santa Monica College.

Her work has been exhibited at the International Encaustic Museum in Cerrillos, NM, Twig Gallery in Los Gatos, CA , and the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto, CA.
