09/30 The Reilly Rhythm Chart: Anatomy of the Face
Students will learn how to draw the portrait using the ‘Reilly Rhythm Chart’, an aide for simplifying the complex anatomy of the human face. The rhythm chart includes the major landmarks of the skull, as well as key muscle groups of the face. This technique will help artists gain confidence in the drawing the complex anatomy and perspectives of the human face. This course will be a great preparation for portrait painting.

Students will learn how to draw the portrait using the ‘Reilly Rhythm Chart’, an aide for simplifying the complex anatomy of the human face. The rhythm chart includes the major landmarks of the skull, as well as key muscle groups of the face. This technique will help artists gain confidence in the drawing the complex anatomy and perspectives of the human face. This course will be a great preparation for portrait painting.
In this corse, we will:
- Identify the landmarks of the skull, and key muscle groups.
- Analyze photographed portraits, classify major anatomical landmarks
- Draw frontal, 3/4 view and profile views of the face using the rhythm chart.
- Learn to draw the individual features of the face volumetrically.
The rhythm chart was developed by Frank Reilly (1906-1967), a well known artist and teacher from New York.

About the Instructor
Domenica is a freelance artist, illustrator and instructor in the Bay Area. She is a graduate from SJSU's BFA Animation/Illustration program, trained in the Florentine method of drawing under Sheldon Borenstein. She loves blending the romance of the Renaissance and Baroque with contemporary painting and illustration. She loves painting, teaching her high school students, visiting SF art museums and draws in all her free time ;)
