Designed for all experience levels, this workshop encourages curiosity, play, and freedom from perfection. Description

This 3-hour Abstraction Mixed Media workshop invites students to explore creative expression beyond representation through layering, texture, and intuitive mark-making. Participants will experiment with a variety of materials—such as acrylic paint, ink, collage, and drawing tools—to build dynamic, non-objective compositions. Through guided prompts and demonstrations, students will learn how to balance color, shape, and contrast while developing a personal visual language.

About the Instructor

Claudia Gray is a California-based, award-winning artist and author, part of the Field Artist Faculty for the Plein Air Convention & Expo 2026. Best known for her plein air paintings that capture the shimmering light and shifting moods of natural landscapes, she also works in photography, glass, and jewelry. Her art has been exhibited in galleries, museums, juried shows, and retail spaces, including a commission of 450 glass surfboards for the St. Regis Hotel. She is the author of The Beginning of the Beginning (2023) and Creative Minds and Forces (2025).

Supply List

Paints
For this workshop, I suggest versatile acrylic paints, a staple for mixed media due to fast drying times and excellent layering. However if you prefer oils, it’s ok. Please bring your favorite colors (white and black a must). Please bring enough paint. We’ll be using a fair amount, and I don’t want you to run short.

Acrylic: Heavy body (for texture) or high-flow acrylics are recommended. Key colors:
- Titanium White (large tube)
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalo Blue
- Alizarin Crimson
- Cadmium
- Yellow Light
- Yellow Ochre
- Burnt Sienna
- Black.

Oils: Here is a suggested split primary palette:
- Cadmium Lemon (WN) 
- Cad Yellow Pale (WN)
- Gold Ochre (WN)
- Cad Red Medium (Rembrandt) and Permanent Rose (WN)
- Ultramarine Blue (Rembrandt) and Winsor Blue Red Shade (WN)
- Titanium White (Winton, large tube)
- Black

* Optional colors: Orange (medium), Sap Green, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, any other favorite color you can’t live without

Painting Supplies
- A variety of synthetic brushes, including large flat brushes (1+ inch), round brushes, and filberts.
- Palette Knives (small and flexible for mixing; extra sizes optional for painting directly). Essential for mixing and applying paint, creating impasto textures, and scraping back layers.
- Mediums & Additives: Gel Medium (for body/texture), Modeling Paste (for thick texture), and Matte or Gloss Medium (to extend paint). Or Any paint medium that you like (optional).
- Palette: A palette paper pad, glass cutting board, or large plastic tray for mixing.

Canvas / Surfaces

- 1-2 surfaces, either panels, canvas, boards or rolled canvas (to tape to a board) Suggested sizes: 11x14, 16x20

Mixed Media Supplies
- Mark-Making Tools: Graphite pencils, charcoal, water-soluble crayons (like Neocolor II), oil pastels, or paint pens (Posca pens).
- Tools for Applying/Removing Paint: Silicone tools, brayers (rollers), old credit cards, sponges, and spray bottles for dripping techniques.
- Stencils: To create layered patterns.
- Texturing Tools: Bubble wrap, plastic mesh, shelf-liner, old credit cards, and corrugated cardboard
- Adhesive: Glue or acrylic gel
- Collage & Texture Material: Tissue paper, old book pages, tea bags, fabric scraps, stencils, stamps, and texture paste.Collage material or photos, extra fun papers, reference material

Essential Studio Supplies
- Cleaning/Preparation: Paper towels (blue shop rags are durable), rags, water containers for brushes, and apron.
- Tape: Painter's tape or masking tape for clean edges or masking off areas.
- Spray bottle of water
