Whether you’re picking up a pencil for the first time or looking to refine your basic skills, this class will introduce you to essential techniques, including line work, shading, perspective, and composition.
Each week, we’ll explore a new fundamental aspect of drawing through hands-on exercises, guided demonstrations, and personalized feedback. You'll learn to observe and capture the world around you, from still life to simple landscapes and portraiture.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of drawing principles and the confidence to continue developing your artistic skills. No prior experience is needed—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!
Weekly Breakdown
Week 1: Intro to Drawing Basics
- Understanding line, shape, and form
- Warm up exercises to train the eye and hand
- Breaking objects down into basic geometric shapes
Week 2: Light, Shadow, and Shading Techniques
- Learn about form and Shadow
- Practice mark making techniques (hatching, cross-hatching, and blending)
- Create simple value scales and value studies
Week 3: Proportion and Composition
- Learn to “block in”
- Practice different ways to “measure” in order to get accurate proportions
- Discuss composition and focal points
Week 4: Intro to Still Life
- Explore different textures and surfaces
- Techniques for adding depth and contrast
- Develop a still life drawing
Week 5: Intro to Portraiture
- Breaking down the portrait into line and shape
- Learn about proportions and gesture
- Create volume through the use of shading and blending
Week 6: Portraiture Final Project
- Learn to work from reference photographs
- Focus on composition and focal points
- Create atmosphere and volume with the use of value and contrast
About the Instructor
Dustin Adamson (b. 1987) is an emerging American artist trained in the classical tradition of painting and drawing. Dustin has a strong interest in the art and techniques of the old masters, from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century. After graduating in 2010 from with Distinction from San Diego State University, he began to study figurative drawing, painting, and sculpture with Justin Hess and Alicia Ponzio and human anatomy with Noah Buchanan. After studying for several years in the Bay Area he moved to New Jersey and studied at the Florence Academy of Art US. There he studied intensively an academic curriculum grounded in the 19th-century classical-realist tradition.
During his studies at the Florence Academy of Art US, Dustin received numerous awards and scholarships; including an award for Painting of the Year and the position of teaching assistant.
