Description

In this class, we will explore and capture the beauty of various locations on the San Francisco Peninsula and just across Dunbarton Bridge using soft pastels. Each session will take place outdoors, allowing students to immerse themselves in the natural light and atmosphere of the landscapes they paint.

The course will focus on techniques for layering, blending, and creating depth with pastels while encouraging personal expression and style. Students will receive plenty of individual attention, with demonstrations provided at each class to guide them through different aspects of pastel painting.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, this class offers a supportive and inspiring environment to refine your skills.

Class size is limited to a maximum of 9 students to ensure personalized instruction and a collaborative learning experience.

About the Instructor

Jan Prisco is a pastel and oil painter who focuses on paintings of the San Francisco peninsula and surrounding areas. Most of her paintings are begun plein air with an emphasis on simplification and value while capturing vibrant color and light. Her work can be viewed online at www.janprisco.com.

In addition to exhibiting her work for twelve years at Portola Art Gallery and currently being represented by QD Gallery at Stanford Mall, Jan teaches both plein air and studio classes for Pacific Art League in Palo Alto. In addition, she has taught plein air workshops for Filoli and also for Atherton Arts Foundation, with whom she has served on the Board in the past. 

Especially well known for her seascape and wavescape paintings, Jan is an award winning artist whose work has been juried into local, national and international shows. Two of her past paintings were selected by Filoli to be used for products sold at Filoli’s Garden Shop.

Tombow Dual Brush Pens – Black N15, Middle Gray N65, Light Gray N95.
I will have extras if you cannot find these.

SMALL SKETCH BOOK or Paper on which to sketch.

PAPER: Sanded papers for pastel painting either mounted or non mounted. I like UART but others are good too. Bring relatively small pieces….8x10, 9x12, 11x14

PASTELS: Soft pastels from Rembrandt, Sennelier, Terry Ludwig, Unison, etc. A few NuPastel colors or the starter box also. A dark NuPastel for underpainting and sketching; I will bring extra pastel boxes for us to share.

EASEL-a field easel. If your field easel does not have someplace to place your pastel box, bring a small table or something upon which to place your pastels.

DRAWING BOARD-some sort of support such as masonite or gatorboard to tape your paper to when you put it on the easel. I have extras. I will have tape.

WET WIPES and a dry cloth/paper towels

DENATURED ALCOHOL (YOU CAN GET AT CVS) 70% OR HIGHER and small container for small amount such
as an empty baby food jar. I will bring extra.

INEXPENSIVE LARGE BRISTLE BRUSH- LARGE old bristle brush will be great, usually used for oil painting. Size 8, 9, 10 or 12. I will bring extras.

PAPER TOWELS, HAT, SUN SCREEN AND WATER

UMBRELLA is nice if you have one.
